Muddy Waters (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known as the “Father of Modern Chicago Blues,” played a key part in the postwar blues rebirth. His playing style has been described as “raining down Delta beatitude” by one critic.
Muddy Waters was born on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and began playing the guitar and harmonica at the age of 17 when he was inspired by local blues giants Son House and Robert Johnson.
In 1941, Alan Lomax recorded him in Mississippi for the Library of Congress. He relocated to Chicago in 1943 to pursue a full-time musical career. He started recording for Columbia Records in 1946 and signed with Aristocrat Records in 1947.
